Regulus: The First Nuclear Missile Submarine is a documentary about the development and deployment of the Regulus missile and the Regulus submarines. Featuring never-seen-before and recently declassified footage, the documentary tells the nearly forgotten story of the Navy’s struggle to build a submarine launched guided missile in the post-WWII era, and the result: the SSGs – Regulus guided missile submarines.

Regulus presents the story of the five submarines Tunny, Barbero, Grayback, Growler, and Halibut through Regulus-era veterans including submarine commanders Robert Owens and William Gunn. Regulus covers the gamut from the Cuban Missile Crisis, and shipboard disasters to the difficulty of day-to-day life aboard the diesel boats, the burdens of deployment, and the sacrifices made by the men and their families.

The U.S. Navy in the 1950?s and 60?s was extremely secretive, and greatly restricted the filming of submarines, especially the Regulus boats which were the top secret weapons of the day.
