Decades ago, when I left the Navy, like many I hung up my blues for the last time and assumed that the submarine chapter of my life was closed forever. I now had a house full of kids to take care of, a mortgage, a new job, all the stuff that comes in the form of adjustments to a new life. Eventually, the Submarine Force became a somewhat distant memory.
Then, in 1998, a shipmate opened a webpage for the USS JAMES K. POLK, and as a result, I found myself back in the Submarine Community, to my great pleasure. It is the greatest of “families,” and a joy to be talking again with submariners and their wives, parents, and kids. Now you know why I love my job.
